Chapter 89
The whispers about the Caldwell family potentially partnering with the Thornton family had spread like wildfire through their elite social circle. Yet, in a shocking turn of events, the Caldwells had abruptly changed direction, now seeking a new collaborator.
Dylan nearly cursed under his breath, barely stopping himself as he shot a glance at Nathan. He exhaled sharply, his irritation palpable. "I completely misjudged Evelyn. How could someone like herโan outsider to the Caldwells, no lessโsomehow win them over?"
Theodore leaned in, curiosity etched on his face. "Is there really no way to salvage this?"
Dylan sighed heavily. "Mrs. Caldwell made it crystal clear that my family should forget about any collaboration. What else can I do?"
But as he spoke, a flicker of hope crossed his features. He turned to Nathan, eyes pleading. "Nathan, you could help me out here, couldnโt you?"
Nathan swirled his drink before meeting Dylanโs gaze. Dylan pressed on, "Evelyn listens to you. If she could just put in a good word for my family with Mr. Caldwell, maybe we could still save this deal." He was also eager to prove to his father the value of his connection to Nathan.
Nathan took a slow sip before responding firmly, "Iโm not getting involved."
Dylanโs face darkened with frustration. "Nathanโ"
Theodore cut in smoothly, "Letโs not dwell on this. Drinks first, business later."
Though seething, Dylan knew better than to push Nathan further. Reluctantly, he raised his glass and clinked it against the othersโ.
Meanwhile, at Evelyn and Natalieโs table, an unwelcome trio approached.
Three men in flashy suits, their smirks oozing arrogance, stopped in front of them. The leader, Trenton, flashed a grin that didnโt reach his eyes. "Care to join us for a drink, ladies?"
One of his lackeys, Marco, slid two glasses toward Evelyn and Natalie.
Evelyn didnโt even glance at the drinks. "Not interested," she said flatly.
Trenton chuckled, undeterred. "No problem." He jerked his chin at Marco. "Get them some water instead."
Marco nodded. "Right away, boss."
Evelyn crossed her arms. "I said Iโm not drinking anything."
Trentonโs smile turned predatory. "Come on, donโt be like that."
Silence. Natalie, beside Evelyn, didnโt bother looking up from her phone.
Trentonโs patience snapped. His voice dropped to a growl. "Youโre drinking with us tonight, whether you like it or not."
Evelyn stood, her gaze icy. "Try me."
Trenton smirked and nudged Marco. "Make sure they drink. But play niceโฆ for now."
Marco reached out, fingers brushing toward Evelynโs chinโ
She caught his wrist in a vice-like grip.
