Chapter 37

At the Caldwell estate, Evelyn found only Olivia at home when she arrived. Marcus and Ethan were both at the company.

Evelyn greeted Olivia warmly.

"Come here, darling," Olivia said, her voice laced with affection. "Ethan and I were just talking about how much we missed you yesterday." She gave Evelyn a playful scolding look, though her eyes sparkled with warmth.

"And here I am, back to see you," Evelyn replied with a soft smile. She settled beside Olivia and linked their arms together. "How have you been? Any health issues lately?"

Olivia shook her head. "I feel wonderful! Ever since you performed that surgery for me, my heart hasnโ€™t given me a single problem."

Evelynโ€™s smile deepened. "That makes me happy."

Years ago, during a trip to Chixdon, Olivia had collapsed from a heart attack on the street. While others hesitated, Evelyn had stepped forward, administering critical first aid that saved Oliviaโ€™s life. Later, she performed the surgery that fully restored Oliviaโ€™s health.

During that time, Olivia and Marcus had grown incredibly fond of Evelyn. Eventually, Olivia had asked her to become her goddaughter.

Olivia shifted the topic. "Ethan mentioned you and Nathan were supposed to finalize the divorce papers today?"

"Thatโ€™s been delayed," Evelyn pressed her lips together before explaining her recent conversation with Leonard.

After listening, Olivia smiled knowingly. "It seems Nathanโ€™s father is gently nudging you two to reconsider. He doesnโ€™t want this divorce to happen, hence the indirect approach."

Evelyn nodded. "I understand that."

Olivia studied her. "And how do you feel about it?"

A faint, bittersweet smile touched Evelynโ€™s lips. "Iโ€™m just waiting for next month to finalize the divorce."

Olivia raised a brow. "Youโ€™re not even tempted to try one last time?"

Evelyn exhaled softly, her gaze distant. "After three years of failing to win Nathanโ€™s heart, I doubt one month will change anything."

She straightened, her voice firmer now. "Even if it could, I donโ€™t want to anymore. Iโ€™m exhausted. I refuse to spend my life chasing after someone elseโ€™s affection. Itโ€™s time I lived for myself."

Olivia squeezed her hand. "Thatโ€™s a wise decision, my dear. I support you completely."

Evelyn chuckled.

The rest of the afternoon passed in pleasant conversation between them. When Marcus and Ethan returned in the evening, their delight at seeing Evelyn made for a lively dinner.

Afterward, Ethan motioned for her to follow him upstairs to his study.
