Chapter 237
"What's the matter, Evelyn?" Natalie was the first to notice something was off. "Why are you drinking like this?"
Evelyn let out a bitter laugh, swirling the amber liquid in her glass. "Oh, nothing serious. I just finally realized how utterly delusional I've been all this time."
She recounted the events of the previous day in excruciating detail, each word laced with self-deprecation.
The more Natalie and Alexander listened, the deeper their frowns grew.
Alexander, in particular, was baffled.
How had things come to this?
That night at the bar, Nathanโs actions had clearly shown he cared for Evelynโso why...?
"You know whatโs hilarious?" Evelynโs voice dripped with irony as she narrowed her eyes. "I actually thoughtโjust for a secondโthat Nathan might have felt something for me. Even a tiny bit. But looking back now? I was a complete fool."
The truth was, both Alexander and Natalie had believed Nathan harbored some affection for Evelyn before.
So this sudden turn of events left them stunned.
Evelyn downed another shot, wiping her lips carelessly with the back of her hand. "I shouldโve given up on Nathan ages ago. Shouldโve stopped lying to myself that this marriage could ever mean anything."
Natalie and Alexander exchanged another glance.
Neither liked seeing their friend like this.
Alexander sighed, unable to decipher what was going through Nathanโs mind.
He had once thought he understood the manโbut reality had proven him wrong.
"What did your grandmother say about all this?" Natalie asked gently.
This time, Evelynโs smile was tinged with sorrow. "She knows everything now. And she supports the divorce completely. She just hopes Iโll find someone who truly loves me someday." She exhaled sharply. "From now on, Iโm done with delusions. My attitude toward Nathan? Itโs changing for good."
Alexander heard the finality in her voice. She had truly given up on Nathan.
He leaned in, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Evelyn," he said seriously, locking eyes with her, "are you absolutely sure about this?"
Unbeknownst to them, Dylan Reeves sat in a shadowed booth across the room, his gaze fixed on their interaction with unsettling intensity.
From his angle, the innocent exchange between Evelyn and Alexander looked far more intimate than it was.
Alexander had leaned in so close that Dylan was convinced he was about to kiss her.
Without hesitation, Dylan pulled out his phone and snapped a photo of the scene.
