Chapter 116
Julian Montgomeryโs polite smile deepened, warm and inviting. โThe pleasure is all mine.โ With that, the three of them walked away together.
Evelyn Hartley didnโt glance back at Nathan Black. She refused to give him the satisfaction.
Once Evelyn and her companions had disappeared from sight, Nathanโs brows furrowed, his expression darkening with something unreadable.
Inside the elevator, Evelyn exhaled slowly, trying to steady her racing thoughts. As the silence stretched, an idea suddenly struck her. She turned to Julian and Cassandra with a practiced smile. โOh, I just rememberedโI drove myself here. Thereโs no need for you to escort me home, Mr. Montgomery.โ
Evelyn mentally cursed herself for her earlier agreement. What had she been thinking, accepting Julianโs offer right in front of Nathan? What had she hoped to prove?
Cassandra smoothly interjected, โItโs no trouble at all, Evelyn. Julian can still drive you. Weโll arrange for someone to bring your car back to the hospital later.โ
Evelyn shook her head. โThat wonโt be necessary. I prefer to drive myself.โ She glanced at her watch. โIโm already running late, so Iโll head back to the hospital on my own.โ
She flashed them a quick, polite smile. โThank you for the kind offer, though. Goodbye.โ
Before they could protest, she gave a small wave and strode away, her steps brisk and determined.
Cassandra watched Evelynโs retreating figure with a slight frown before turning to Julian. โWhat do you think of her?โ
Julianโs gaze remained thoughtful. โSheโs guarded. Extremely so.โ
Cassandra nodded, considering his words. โUnderstandable. Weโre practically strangers to her. Give it timeโsheโll lower her defenses after a few more meetings.โ
She hesitated before asking, โDo you think our plan will work?โ
Julian tilted his head, his expression unreadable. โDo you doubt me?โ
Cassandraโs lips curved into a faint smile. โNot at all.โ
โGood,โ Julian replied, his voice laced with quiet confidence. โLeave it to me.โ
Cassandra said nothing more.
Later that evening, Evelyn worked late, returning to the Black family estate well past eight. As she stepped into the bedroom, her eyes immediately landed on Nathan, seated at the desk, his presence cold and commanding.
Evelyn barely spared him a glance before turning away.
โWho was the man you had lunch with today?โ Nathanโs voice sliced through the silence like a blade.
Evelynโs tone was icy. โThatโs none of your concern.โ
Nathanโs expression darkened instantly. โNone of my concern? Donโt forget, Evelynโweโre still married. To the world, youโre my wife.โ
Evelyn turned to face him, her gaze as sharp as frost. โAnd does being your wife mean Iโm forbidden from dining with other men?โ
โOf course,โ Nathan snapped.
Evelyn let out a soft, mocking laugh. โBefore you start dictating my actions, Mr. Black, perhaps you should examine your own. Were you thinking about your marital status when you were dining with Serena Cole?โ
Nathan stiffened, momentarily speechless.
